Longmen Lineage

Also known as: Dragon Gate Lineage, Longmen School, Lung-men, Longmen Pai, Lóng mén pài

Definition

The Longmen lineage is an important branch of Quanzhen Daoism that traditionally honors Qiu Chuji as its patriarch. Later Longmen accounts place particular emphasis on the transmission of precepts, while Wang Changyue's early Qing teachings were influential in shaping that tradition. A lineage's retrospective ancestry and the date of its institutional formation are different questions.

Knowledge guide

Ancestry, genealogies, and precepts

Longmen points both to Qiu Chuji's place in Quanzhen history and to later accounts of lineage succession and ordination. Qiu's own career, a retrospective genealogy, and Wang Changyue's institutional activity should not be collapsed into one event.

Four threads in Longmen history

People, genealogies, institutions, and texts provide different kinds of evidence.

Patriarch

Qiu Chuji and Quanzhen

Longmen honors Qiu as an ancestor, but he was also a leading figure in the wider Quanzhen movement.

Succession

Zhao Daojian and ordination lineages

Later sources name Zhao Daojian as the first Longmen precept master; their succession lists need edition-specific checking.

Institution

Wang Changyue's teachings

Wang's precept teachings at Beijing's Baiyun Guan became a prominent feature of later Longmen practice.

Text

Longmen Xinfa

The work associated with Wang's teachings shows how a later Longmen tradition explained precepts and religious cultivation.

Patriarch and branch are not the same date

Traditional ancestry and a recognizable institution may be separated by generations.

    Jin–Yuan period

    Qiu Chuji in Quanzhen history

His life and leadership belong to early Quanzhen history and became a resource for later Longmen genealogies.

    Precept lineages become clearer

Later Daoist writings trace succession through Zhao Daojian; generations and branches should be checked against their sources.

Teachings at Baiyun Guan and the text Longmen Xinfa give this tradition a more visible institutional and textual form.

These names are connected but differ in scope.

01

Quanzhen Daoism

The wider movement, patriarchs, and multiple branches.
Distinction
Not all Quanzhen history is Longmen history.
02

Longmen lineage

Meaning
A Quanzhen branch that honors Qiu Chuji as its patriarch.
Focus
Ancestry, genealogies, and later organization.
Distinction
A later genealogy does not prove the same institutions existed in Qiu's lifetime.
03

Longmen precept lineage

Meaning
An account of Longmen succession marked by precept transmission.
Focus
Ordination generations, precepts, and teaching texts.
Distinction
Not every historical form of Longmen can be reduced to this one strand.

Where to go next

Begin with Qiu Chuji and Quanzhen, then examine the sources for Zhao Daojian's succession. Finally use Wang Changyue and Longmen Xinfa to study early Qing developments.

Longmen's spiritual ancestry is traced to Qiu Chuji, one of Wang Chongyang's leading disciples. Qiu was a leader of Quanzhen as a whole, however, so revering him as an ancestor is not proof that he established all of the later lineage's distinct institutions. The history of Longmen must include both ancestral memory and the development of its transmitted practices.

Later accounts describe lines of precept transmission and distinguish teachers responsible for different forms of lineage authority. Such genealogies are important to religious identity, but their retrospective character matters. A sequence of names recorded in a later lineage account should not automatically be treated as a contemporary administrative record for every generation.

Wang Changyue is remembered as a major renewer of Longmen in the early Qing. His teaching and ordination activity at Beijing's White Cloud Temple emphasized observing precepts as a foundation of cultivation. This renewal shaped later Quanzhen religious life and helped extend Longmen's influence beyond one temple.

Precepts, temple institutions, and internal cultivation are connected dimensions of this history. The emphasis on discipline did not turn Longmen into something outside Quanzhen, nor does it justify treating all earlier Quanzhen teaching as concerned only with alchemical technique. Longmen is best understood through the relationship between lineage, religious conduct, and transmitted authority.
