Overview

Within the Three Officials calendar, Shangyuan is the Heavenly Official's sacred birthday and is associated with blessings. Its position in the first lunar month places it within the wider season of New Year celebrations.

The source describes temple observances alongside lantern displays, music, performance and public festivities. Religious worship and communal celebration thus share the date without every lantern gathering being a specifically Daoist ceremony.

Shangyuan emphasizes the Daoist calendar connection, while Yuanxiao and Lantern Festival foreground broader festive usage. These names can refer to the same occasion from different perspectives. Accounts of its origins bring together several traditions, so the festival should not be attributed to one isolated founding event on the strength of a single origin story.
