Overview

He came from Ninghai in Shandong and had an early interest in the patterns of change, yin and yang, calendars and divination. He entered Wang Chongyang's circle in 1168. His several personal and religious names reflect stages of the biography rather than several different teachers.

His later activity connected places in northern China before his return to Ninghai, where he died at Xiantian Temple. Accounts emphasize both withdrawal and public teaching: the figure remembered for silence could also attract listeners to explanations of the Dao.

The Huashan lineage's ancestral recognition and the Yuan court's posthumous honors explain his place in Quanzhen collective memory. Stories of supernatural instruction and accurate predictions are another layer of that memory. They should be distinguished from the geographical and teaching framework of his career.
