Overview

Guan Yu's courtesy name was Yunchang. The biographical tradition places his origins in Xie County in the Hedong region of present-day Shanxi. His identity as a military figure provides the starting point for the later religious image, but does not by itself explain all the roles assigned to him in worship.

A Buddhist temple-foundation narrative connects Guan Yu and his son Guan Ping with Yuquan Mountain in Dangyang. In that story they appear to a monk, a temple is established and Guan Yu receives Buddhist precepts. This is a religious account of his incorporation into a Buddhist sacred setting, not an episode to insert without distinction into his military biography.

Later Buddhist tradition includes Guan Yu among temple guardians. Daoism likewise venerates him as a protector, particularly under the title Guan Sheng Dijun. Names such as Guan Gong and Guandi therefore point toward the same remembered figure while emphasizing respect, divine status or a particular setting of worship.
