Overview

Ceremonial vestments and everyday robes serve different purposes. Fayi denotes vestments worn by ritual masters during services, while daopao and other robes belong to the wider range of Daoist clothing. The distinction concerns the garment's use, not simply whether its wearer is a Daoist.

Descriptions of these garments also distinguish their construction. Ceremonial vestments and crane cloaks are generally described with straight collars and front openings, while ordinary robes commonly have crossed collars and overlapping fronts. Headdresses, hair arrangements and footwear complete the ensemble; the broader entry on Daoist dress places these garments in that setting.
